β¦ Synopsis
COVER PICTURE
The cover picture shows a color photo of some crystals of an organic radical compound that exhibits liquid-crystalline behavior, together with its molecular/crystal structure obtained by X-ray analysis. The compound, a 4-heptylbiphenylcarboxamide derivative of 4-(N-methyl)amino-TEMPO, shows a magnetic behavior that is well expressed by a singlettriplet model and it also possesses a mesogenic phase. A couple of short contacts observed between the two crystallographically independent molecules are thought to be responsible for the spin-spin interactions and a packing feature similar to the lamellar structure of amphiphilic phospholipid bilayers or lyotropic liquid crystals found in the crystal structure of this compound is considered to be relevant to the formation of a mesogenic phase. Details are discussed in the article by S.
