A planar microcavity containing quantum wells has been etched into cylindrical pillars. We observe the anticrossing behavior characteristic of strong coupling between exciton and 0D photon modes.

We analyze the microcavity waveguides and derive the coupling constant based on the coupled mode theory. The formula contains only two parameters with clear physical meanings, the quality factor of the cavity modes and the phase shift that the lightwave acquires when tunnelling between two cavities.
