β¦ Synopsis
Spatial correlations in ionic colloidal solutions are studied within the hypemetted chain approximation, applied to the charged hard sphere model for highly asymmetric electrolyte solutions, and modified to account for stronger binding of the counterions within the solvation shell of the polyion. This enhanced ion-colloid attraction gives rise to stronger screening of the coulombic repulsion among the polyions. The reduced order in the solution conforms with experimental observations. In extreme cases, a partial association of the colloidal particles linked by the common counterions is observed.
