Many teachers in our secondary schools, colleges and umversltles are aware of the developmental needs and concerns of the students But they are unable to assist the students adequately m meeting their emotional, social, physical and educational needs because they are pre-occupled with teaching the acadermc school subjects for as many as five or six classes, each composed of tharty to fourty or more students There is a great need for secondary schools, colleges, and umversltles m Nigeria to run a genuinely comprehensive counselhng service with quahfied and responsible personnel The needs, concerns of the students m particular, the changes m the restitutions of learning, and the needs and concerns of our developing nation m general should be vitally considered when developing, extending and managing such a service A functional schoolcollege-or unlverslty-w~de counselhng unit, with appropriate support from the admlmstratlon, staff, students and the communities vail help the m&vldual student feel more competent to deal with has or her educational, vocational, social, personal and emotional concerns * Paper presented at the Ninth International Round Table for the Advancement of Counselhng,
