โฆ Synopsis
A SmlC~-target made by electromagnetic isotope separa tion ha s been b ombarded with 7.5-8.5 MeV d eu t erons and 8.6 MeV protons . Inelas tic scattered groups corresponding to Coulom b excitati o n of th e level at 122 keV h av e b een obs erved in ev er y cas e . a nd in one ru n with 8.5 MeV deute rons Coulomb excitation of levels at 807 k eV and 1079 ke V has b een seen.
The red uced transition pr obabilit ies t o t he se states are measured as 4.1ยฑ0.1, 0.07 ยฑ0.02 a nd 0.12ยฑ 0.02 respe. ctively , in units of e 2 X 10-4S em'. Th e r ed uced transitio n probabilities for t he two highest excit ed s ta tes a re several times the single particle val u es. This is a strong in dication of th e co llect ive na t ure of both these st a t es. Accordin gly, these lev els are in terprete d as be taand ~amma-vib ratio nal st at es. The partial lifetime an d the nuclear strength paramet er for t he EO-transition b et ween th e 807 keV an d t he 122 k eV levels have been calculat ed fro m the experimental data a nd ar e found t o be in poor agre em ent with the theor etical values .
