✦ Synopsis
Epidemiological studies have found dierent prevalence rates for Alzheimer's disease in African-Asian, Saudi Arabian and European-American Societies. It is hypothesized that high cholesterol diet may account for the dierence in these prevalence rates given that elevated cholesterol can induce extracellular acidi®cation which, in turn, increase the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha. In this paper, a neuroimmunological explanation is advanced that outlines a possible causal pathway that leads from extracelular acidi®cation and elevated tumor necrosis factor-alpha to the three leading chacterisitics of Alzhemier's disease: senile plaques, neuro®brillary tangles and cognitive de®cits.
