**Abstract** Four studies examined the relation of trait selfโhandicapping with healthโrelated measures. Study 1 showed that, over time, selfโhandicapping and maladjustment reinforce each other. Study 2 showed that selfโhandicappers reported a loss in competence satisfaction which, in turn, mediated
