## Abstract The principal aim of this paper is to estimate a stochastic frontier cost function and an inefficiency effects model in the analysis of the primary healthβcare services purchased by the public authority and supplied by 180 providers in 1996 in Catalonia. The evidence from our sample doe

Abstract
This study examined the impact of managed care and other environmental factors on hospital inefficiency in 1631 US hospitals during the period 1990β1996. A panel, stochastic frontier regression model was used to estimate inefficiency parameters and inefficiency scores.
The results suggest that mean estimated inefficiency decreased by about 28% during the study period. Inefficiency was negatively associated with health maintenance organization (HMO) penetration and industry concentration. It was positively related with Medicare share and forβprofit ownership status. Copyright Β© 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

## Abstract The paper explores the link between managerial performance and cost efficiency of 617 Japanese general local public hospitals in 1999β2007. Treating managerial performance as unobservable heterogeneity, the paper employs a panel data stochastic cost frontier model with latent classes. F
This paper analyses the technical efficiency in the hydroelectric generating plants of a main Portuguese electricity enterprise EDP (Electricity of Portugal) between 1994 and 2004, investigating the role played by increase in competition and regulation. A random cost frontier method is adopted. A tr
This paper uses an econometric frontier model to evaluate the technical efficiency of a sample of Portuguese travel agencies. The model encompasses a Cobb-Douglas cost frontier approach, with data running from 2000 to 2004, and makes use of financial variables to generate the travel agencies' effici
We investigate how closely NBA teams play up to their potential. We find that shooting, rebounding, stealing the ball and blocking shots raise the number of potential wins while turnovers lower it. We also learn that better coaching and defensive prowess raise a team's win efficiency.
