Many instzllations workin, d with different processes in a developing country (Libya) are taken as example and actual cost analysis carried out taking in consideration 211 extra additional costs inherent to the erection and maintenance of a desalting installation in a developing country. When it is possible , actual costs are compared to theoretical ones and the reasons of the observed discrepancy explained. INTRODUCTIOX The desalted water production in Libya was started in 1976 by the running of the inst2112tions of Zuerz , Zliten , Tripoli West , Sirte and Derna . During the Five Year Plan (1976-1980) 2 very Large programme of desalination plants of sea water Hill be realized. According to this progranme, ten large desalination plants will enter into oper2tion, tile total capacity of desalination units being pianned to be in 2980 about 165 thousand m3/day .
