✦ Synopsis

Annealed mctcoritic phosphate crystals have been irradiated by 600 MeV protoas to simulate cosmic ray irradiation in spacc. Spallation recoU tracks were thin revealed, which mimic Mica tracks, specially when obsorved in the SEM. A production yield of 9.3:~.2.2x10 "8 spallatica track per proton has bern obtained for merrillite, and a substantially lower value (2.5 per proton) for apmite. A nominal productim yield in space of 6 tra~s per year has been derived, which may bc used for a rough estimate of spallation track densities in chotutritic merriilite.
