✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Serious corrosion of large concrete MouchEl cooling towers has been found to be associated with the activities of sulphur‐oxidising bacteria which were found to be present in large numbers in the circulating waters and the wet corroded material. Pure and mixed cultures of the bacteria have been shown by in vitro experiments to produce sufficient acid from the oxidation of sulphur to corrode test samples of concrete and β€œciment fondu.” The nature of the corrosion and the type of bacteria responsible, appear to be identical with those reported by Parker^1^ in concrete sewer pipes.
