The characteristics of the surfaces of worn diamond segments in circular saws for the sawing of granite have been investigated. A scanning electron microscope and a toolmaker's microscope were used to examine the worn surfaces, and radial sawblade wear and grinding ratio during sawing were measured.
The acidity of wood and its polyphenolic content are shown to be primary factors concerned in the corrosion of sawblade steels (Krilov 1985). Those polyphenolic compounds which possess two or three adjacent hydroxyl groups are particularly important because of their ability to form iron chelates. In
