We regret that Eq. (A2) of Appendix B contains an error. The correct version of the empirical expression for the surface energy, c m fMxOy g-vac , of a liquid oxide at its melting point, T m , as derived from the linear fit through the data points in Fig. A2, is given by

where V m fMxOy g is the molar volume of the corresponding oxide phase at T m . Calculations and results employing Eq. (A2) need no revisions, as they were done using the correct expression.
