✦ Synopsis

We discuss the role of correlations in nuclei, introduced by the short-range repulsion of the N-N interaction and the N-N tensor force. These correlations, which are neglected in mean-field descriptions, have a large effect. The experimentally determined number of correlated nucleons and their distribution in k, E-space agrees with the predictions of theory. We also discuss the distribution of correlated nucleons in r -space.
