✦ Synopsis
High-resolution synchrotron photoelectron spectra (PES) of ethylene are obtained at several photon energies (70-220 eV). A recent multi-reference singles and doubles configuration interaction calculation by Murray and Davidson of the binding energy spectrum shows quantitative agreement with the present synchrotron PES experiment in the inner valence region. The observed photon energy dependence of the photoionization cross section of the correlation (satellite) state at 27.4 eV is supportive of the view that this feature of the binding energy spectrum derives most of its intensity from "intrinsic" correlations (i.e. initial state and final state configuration mixing).
