✦ Synopsis
Several simultaneous interpenetrating networks (IPN) of castor oil polyurethane (COPUN) and polystyrene divinyl benzene (PSN) were synthesized under conditions where the free radical polymerization of styrene and the aosslinking reaction of castor oil and toluene diisocyanate proat comparable ratex Cornpariaon of the mech ~i c a l properties and crosslink density of the COPUN and COPUN/PSN-IPNa indicates a marginal increase in tensile strength and croselink density from COPUN to 6oCOPUN/40 PSN IPN. IPN samples prepared with further increased PSN content show steady decreaee in the above propertics This r e v 4 of the expected trend was attributed to the poesible greater molecular interpenetration achieved due to similar gelation times with resultant extension of chains and increme in free volume between cr&ks This was further confirmed from thermogravimetric data on the initial stages of decompoeition of the IPNa
