Abstract

The correlation between the magnitudes of spin dependent scattering (Δ__RA__) and impurity polarization was examined in current perpendicular to plane (CPP‐) giant magnetoresistance (GMR) films with ultra‐thin Cu inserted Fe‐Co layers, with changing the chemical compositon of Fe‐Co. The enhancing effect of Δ__RA__ by Cu insertion was remarkable for Fe~70~Co~30~ layers in which the body centered cubic structure is maintained against Cu insertion and large spin polarization of dissolved Cu is observed via X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism. We thus conclude that the enhancement of spin dependent scattering originates from the spin polarized Cu atoms embedded in Fe‐Co alloys. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
