✦ Synopsis

The results of the characterisation of specimens of AISI 316 LN steel to be used for the construction of superconducting composite cables are given. A systematic study of the correlation existing between the serration effect, shown by several austenitic stainless steels subjected to tensile tests, and temperature is given. A physical model is proposed which connects the serration effect to the transition of stainless steel specimens' portions from the austenitic to the martensitic phase.
