Abstract
Calculations are given concerning various corrections upon the potential energy of two colloidal particles at various distances. The corrections arise from the considerations of finite ionic volumes and from the influence upon the dielectric constant of the solvent by added ions. The ionic volume effect is the most important correction. Limits of the applicability of the Derjaguin and LandauβVerwey and Overbeek theory are given (see section 3.5). The flat plate approximation and 1β1 electrolyte solutions are considered only. The paper is an extension of an earlier treatment by the author on corrections of the double layer potential 7, 872 (1958) in this Journal.
