β¦ Synopsis
I read with great interest the case report by Liu et al.
[1] pertaining to coronary artery stent infection. In 2000, the article "Coronary Artery Stent Infection" was published, which reviewed the world literature and proposed diagnostic criteria for identifying coronary artery stent infections [2]. These criteria for suspected coronary artery stent infections are certainly in their infancy, have not been validated, and currently should only be used to heighten awareness of this potentially lethal problem. Nonetheless, the patient presented by Liu et al. [1] would have satisfied criteria for definitive coronary artery stent infection and prior to surgery may have fulfilled the criteria for possible coronary artery stent infection.
Fortunately, coronary artery stent infections are exceedingly rare. Systematic compilation and critical review of these and future cases are needed to formulate accurate diagnostic criteria for coronary artery stent infections.
