A coring device, made from standard plumbing parts, is discussed. It is particularly useful for sampling and maintaining the depth profile of the soft sediments underlying relatively shallow waters. The device uses an easily detachable, inexpensive coring tube which can be destroyed in segmenting the sample. A special coring tube into which chemically sensitive probes can be inserted for analyses of depth profiles is described.
