✦ Synopsis
A simple "pseudo-atomic" model IS prcrentcd to explain the Ii&and field splitting of the core Zn 3d and Cd 4d orbit& in the photoelectron spectra of h1czZ.n and MezCd respectively. We consider the electrostatic interaction between the valence pz electrons and the core d vacancy. Using the CICCSS pz population as an adjustable factor, we are able to obtJin good agreement with the observed line positions Thr: p, CYCCSS population determined above has also been employed to calcul&e the splitticgs of the Cd 4p, 3d and 3p vacancy Icvc!s and the l't Cd nuc!ear elccttlc field gradrent in hIc2Cd.
