A reasonably stabilized trichloromethyl anion (TCMA) was formed by the reaction of chloroform with an electrogenerated base prepared by the electroreduction of Zpyrrolidone, and the addition of this TCIvIA to a$unsaturated esters gave the corresponding B-trichloromethyl esters in good yields.
