The mechanism of the (\mathrm{TlCu}{3} \mathrm{~S}{2} / \mathrm{TlCu}{2} \mathrm{~S}{2}) phase transformation has been studied experimentally by neutron diffraction and theoretically by three-dimensional extended Hückel band calculations. Experiments show that only one of the sites is attacked during the oxidative extraction of copper from ' (\mathrm{HCH}{1} \mathrm{~S}{2}), the site that according to the calculations should be the most vulnerable. The results support a previously presented transformation mechanism model based on topotaxy. O 1994 Academic Press, inc.
