✦ Synopsis


Molecular oxygen as an oxidizing agent is becoming increasingly important in organic synthesis. We have investigated the oxygenation of a-branched aldehydes in weakly basic media with cupric salts as catalyst ,* and wish to report that the method is an efficient way to synthesize ketones having one less carbon.

The reaction is highly selective for the aldehyde group, as is illustrated in the following partial synthesis of progesterone.
