✦ Synopsis

The behaviour of rotating Cu electrodes in 0.5 M NaC1 solutions has been examined in the pH range from 8 to 9. Free corrosion potential measurements and quasi-stationary current-potential relationships show a clear-cut transition at pH values near 8.5; the rate control on the corrosion process is anyway diffuse both in the prepassivation and in the passivation region.

The current-time behaviour shows that passivation can be caused by the alkalinisation of the solution layer at the interphase or by the attainment of a more noble electrode potential.
