## Abstract A detailed investigation of the polymerisation conditions for poly(2,2′‐(1,4‐phenylene)5,5′‐bibenzimidazole) (__para__‐PBI) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) led to the preparation of high molecular weight polymer. The polymer solutions could be used directly to produce phosphoric acid (PA)‐

✦ Synopsis
Abstract
Copolymers of poly(2,5‐benzimidazole) (ABPBI) and poly[2,2′‐(p‐phenylene)‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole] (__p__PBI) were synthesized for use as fuel cell membranes to take advantage of the properties of both constituents. The composition of the copolymers were controlled by changing the feed ratio of 3,4‐diaminobenzoic acid and terephthalic acid with 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine in the polycondensation reaction. The copolymer membranes showed higher conductivities, better mechanical properties, and larger acid absorbing abilities than commercial poly[2,2′‐(m‐phenylene)‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole] membranes.

Nitro-substituted PBI (NO 2 -PBI) was synthesized through the homogeneous reaction of the PBI powder with nitric acid in sulfuric acid. The degree of substitu
## Abstract Summary: Poly(2,5‐benzimidazole) (ABPBI) was synthesized in a novel polymerization medium containing CH~3~SO~3~H and P~2~O~5~. 3,4‐Diaminobenzoic acid, a monomer for ABPBI, is soluble in the medium and the polymerization was therefore performed in a homogeneous state. It produced polyme
## Abstract Commercial polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes impregnated with phosphoric acid have become a serious candidate as electrolytes for high temperature PEMFC. Much research effort has been devoted to the study of this proton conducting membrane.[1, 2] On the other hand, PBI is not the simple
