✦ Synopsis

Reactivity ratios rvp = 0.04 and rsr = 14.6 have been determined for the copolymerisation of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) with styrene (ST). At fixed concentrations of initiator and monomer, the rates of homopolymerisation (H) of these monomers and of n-butyl acrylate (BA) at 338 K followed the sequence HaA > Hvp > Hsx. For the two systems VP/BA and VP/ST, the rates of copolymerisation (C) measured at different feed compositions followed the sequences HaA > C > Hvp and Hvv > HST > C, respectively. For the former, experimental values of C accorded reasonably with rates calculated by assigning a value of 13 to the cross-termination factor ~b. However, it was not possible to assign a single value of ~b capable of yielding such a fit in the system VP/ST.
