Cooperative luminescence is reported for a dilute rare earth system, viz. La203-Yb 3+ 0.5 mol%. The observation of cooperative luminescence can be understood on the basis of the relatively strong interaction between the 4f electrons of neighbouring Yb 3+ ions (in comparison to other rare earth ions)

We report near-IR-to-visible broadband emission in Ytterbium-doped silicate fiber (YF) at 488-nm in-core excitation. This emission is revealed to originate from Yb 3+ -Yb 3+ pair clusters (900 -1200-nm band), whose presence is proved by a separate study of cooperative processes in the fiber, and Yb
We report experimental results showing novel features in photo-darkening and photo-bleaching of a heavily-doped Ytterbium silica fiber exposed to in-core 977-nm and 543-nm irradiation. It is shown that pumping of the fiber at the resonant 977-nm wavelength leads to an increase of absorption in the s
