On the island of Mer at the edge of the Coral Sea, a man and a woman go foraging on the reef flat at low tide. The man walks out near the edge of the reef with a large bamboo spear, pokes around in a shallow lagoon, then stands on a coral head and watches the water for signs of spinefoot, squid, giant trevally, sweet lip, and sea mullet. Seeing the wake of a giant trevally, he crouches, stalks, and throws the spear nearly twenty meters. He misses.
