โœฆ Synopsis

The convection velocity of the gas in the centre of a vertical direct current arc has been determined by measuring the velocity of small carbon particles carried along. These sparks have been photographed with intervals of 1/250 sec. From the mean velocity of the sparks during ~these intervals we derived the velocity of the gas which turned out to be aibout 1 m/sec and to depend on the strength of the electric current and on the height above the lower electrode. Neither the direction of the current nor the length of the arc affect the gas velocity perceptibly.
