Intense magnetic fields (of one or two kilogauss) situated in a background of weak field, and umbral dots (regions of weak field) situated in a background of intense field (the sunspot) have both received considerable, though largely unrelated, discussion in the recent literature. Here we suggest th

✦ Synopsis
Combinations of circularly polarized intense laser pulses I G 10 2 . Ž 7 . W r cm and intense magnetic fields B , 10 gauss are shown to lead to control of electron orbits in atoms and molecules. In particular, it is proposed to use such intense field experiments to produce high-order harmonic generation into the ultraviolet and X-ray regions.
