โœฆ Synopsis

A novel cold-working and annealing process, the controlled-fracture forming process, has been developed for ceramic wires and plates. Metal-sheathed alumina wires are fabricated from presintered billets by the present process. A high bulk density can be achieved in the cold-worked alumina wires, where multiple-packed units of particles and pores with high coordination numbers are gradually eliminated by fracturing and particle flow. Thus-cold-worked alumina wires indicate good resinterability: (1) lower ultimate densification temperature (1200 ยฐC) and (2) nearly complete densification for a short time.
