✦ Synopsis
lonizing irradiations were carried out with mixtures of poly(vinyl chloride) with dimethyl acetamide, 1,2-dichloroethane and di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate both in the presence and in the absence of the crosslinking coagent ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. From the results for both the pre-gel and post-gel stages, quantitative information on the susceptibility of the systems to undergo crosslinking and chain scission was derived, together with the diluent stabilizing properties against the dehydrochlorination of PVC. The dependence of the gel formation process on the coagenI and the nature of the diluents is discussed in the light of recent results. A model of the process is tentatively proposed to account for the data for all the systems examined.
