β¦ Synopsis
It is shown that the excitation profiles of the various Stokes vibrational transitions show the same nodal structure as the initial wavefunctions of the continuum resonance Raman scattering process and hence indicate a reflection principle derived earlier theoretically by others. Continuum resonance Raman excitation profiles of distinct vibrational fundamental and hot band transitions of the isotopically pure molecules 127179Br and 35C12 in the gas phase have been measured and compared with those calculated by means of time-dependent quantum theory.

An inversion method is presented for diatomic potential curves of electronically excited states which are the intermediate states for continuum resonance Raman scattering processes. Assuming a parametric form of the potential, the parameters are directly given as a function of certain frequencies wh
