✦ Synopsis

A 42-year-old woman with a dual diagnosis who presented with aggression and life-threatening self-abuse, in the form of swallowing non-edible objects, was successfully treated with behavior therapy over a 49 month period. The behavior therapy program consisted of contingent restraint and positive approaches including weekly contracts, and individual and group therapy which increased appropriate behaviors and the coping strategies for this individual while reducing the target behaviors. This reduction in target behaviors was maintained while the restraint procedures were faded from the program. The individual has not exhibited any target behaviors for 16 months and has transitioned to a state school.
