โœฆ Synopsis

Recently, growing demands for complementary methods and increasing importance of analysis of very polar solutes in pharmaceutical and clinical analysis, proteomics, metabolomics and glycomics, have brought a chromatographic mode more into the focus of a larger number of chromatographic studies: hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC). Many analytical separation problems which are located at the other extreme of the lipophilicity scale and are outside of the applicability spectrum of RPLC may be well addressed by hydrophilic interaction chromatography. It may also is intriguing for separation scientists that the structural diversity of the available adsorbents is much greater in HILIC than in RPLC and NPLC. However, there is still a debate about the real retention mechanism in HILIC, i. e., whether it follows a partitioning or adsorption mechanism. It might be unclear whether the structural diversity of the surface chemistries can really be exploited. Yet, it becomes clearly evident in experiments that there are distinctive selectivities affordable using different HILIC phases. This special issue on Hydrophilic Interaction Chromatography gives the readers of the Journal of Separation Science an updated and representative overview on what can be accomplished using this chromatographic mode, the typical application fields, and the benefits for polar solutes as compared to traditional RPLC.
