โœฆ Synopsis

Preferentially oriented zeolite membranes (b-oriented ZSM-5) with straight pores along the transport pathway have been prepared, as reported by Tsapatsis and co-workers on p. 716. Along with desirable features such as mechanical stability and high flux, the membranes show high selectivity for the separation of xylene isomers, as shown schematically on the front cover.

Nanocomposite Membranes:

Highly CO 2 -permeable and selective polymer membranes that can be easily and inexpensively produced afford attractive alternatives for the removal of CO 2 from mixed gas streams, such as syngas and contaminated air. Amorphous CO 2 -selective membranes formed from nanocomposites of crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGda) oligomers with up to 10 wt.-% methacrylate-functionalized fumed silica (FS) or an organically modified nanoclay have been created by Spontak and co-workers (p. 699). They have relatively high CO 2 permeability coupled with high CO 2 selectivity due to the specific interaction between quadrupolar CO 2 and the ether linkages along the PEG backbone, and the accompanying enhancement in CO 2 solubility.
