✦ Synopsis

Thts paper describes architecture and tmplementatton of a multimedia authoring envtronment which features content-based management of video The goal of our work is to provtde multrmedia apphcatton developers with a useful vtdeo database, where they gather vtdeo matenals from various sources, store them m a organized format, and use them in multrmedta applications.

The principal design concepts are that (1) tt should have a flexible means to store vrdeo materials m a organized format so that video chps can be retrieved easily, and that (2) it should have a view to each application so that various applications can share the vtdeo materials. To meet these requtrements we designed a multimedia authonng system based on a video object model The video object model features (1) a method to attach annotations not only to scenes but also to things shot in the vtdeo. and (2) a method to define video chps Independently from physical video data. Our experiences m using the system to develop a multtmedta CA1 application are also described to show the advantages of our system
