In the last session, new and developing applications were covered in six presentations. The first of these was on the design details and experimental evaluation of superconducting dipole magnet cryostats for the proposed Superconducting Super Collider high energy physics research facility, which wil

โฆ Synopsis
The morning session was devoted to two reviews of the properties of metallic and non-metallic materials at low temperatures. The first of these by P. Midgeley (Rocket Propulsion Establishment) was entitled 'Review of mechanical properties of metallic materials at low temperatures'. The various methods of testing toughness in metals were described in detail, together with different causes of failure, including weld defects. The mechanical properties of steels, aluminium, niobium, and titanium alloys were presented in a tabular form and their various applications discussed.
