We describe a way of obtaining new weighing matrices from old, which we call weaving because it involves distributing rows and columns of given matrices along the columns and rows of an array to form a partitioned matrix whose blocks have rank one. The method generalizes both the direct sum and direct product of matrices. We use the method to construct some new weighing matrices of relatively small order. 0 1995 John W h y & Soos, Inc.
