β¦ Synopsis
TELOSCHISTES FLAVICANS hae been found to contain beside8 anthraquinone pigments, a colourless substance. The former have been found to vary in composition, l-3 but the colourlesa substance seems to have been the same in all the samples of the lichen and by employing column chromatography (magnesium carbonate) nearly l$ yield on the dry weight of the lichen could be secured. It hae now been given the name l%icanicin** based on the species name of the lichen, omitting the first syllable in view of the compound being colourless. Vicauicin crystallized from benzene as m.p. 248-250'. It had the molecular formula colourlees stout needles,
