✦ Synopsis

One of us (WJ) is heavily engaged in the instruction of courses in capillary gas chromatography, where it soon becomes evident that a number of otherwise skilled users suffer some confusion from the various recommendations that have emerged as our progress in injection techniques has evolved. This paper contains no new research data, but represents instead an attempt to offer a new set of guidelines, extracted and/or rephrased from the works of others, as supported or modified by our own experience. These guidelines are offered in the light of present knowledge, and will undoubtedly require further revision as progress in understanding just what happens in the injection process continues. They will be of scant value to the expert capillary chromatographer, but may help the ordinary practitioner who experiences difficulty with splitless and on-column injections.

Finally, this should be considered neither a critical nor a comprehensive review; a number of workers.. . Trestianu, Galli and members of Schomburg's group, to cite just a few.. . have made notable contributions to injection techniques and apparatus that are not cited here. Other workers, including Pretorius and Bertsch, are currently involved in studies that may lead to further modifications in our concepts of what occurs during the injection process. The publications cited in this offering are limited to those having a direct bearing on the formulation of these revised guidelines.

Process visualization can be a very powerful tool for understanding dynamic processes. Process visualization requires a non-destructive technique that can be monitored in real time. In this paper various methods of non-destructive inspection will be described and compared. The applicability of these

With discovery of an increasing number of candidate genes that may affect inter-individual variability in response to drugs, the design of drug trials that incorporate their study has become relevant. We discuss the determination of sample size for such studies when the number of tests to perform is
