The performance of a new pulsed arc cluster ion source (PACIS) is demonstrated for pure metal cluster ions and anions as well as mixed metal-rare-gas clusters. Pure metal clusters like W$ exhibit intensity distributions similar to those from laser vaporization sources. The ion current of the PACIS i

β¦ Synopsis
Tunneling transmission coefficients through rotationa barriers are investigated as a function of argon cluster ion size using the WKB approximation.
The results indicate that tunneling coefficients corresponding to transmissions of a few percent, extend over time windows of ten orders of magnitude. Hence, a very broad distribution of metastable lifetimes is expected for decay of cluster ions by tunneling through rotational barriers.

A linear correlation plot is presented for the first ionization energy of the rare-gas n-mers, which extrapolates to a similar correlation for the photoemission threshold of the solid rare gases. Also a simple correlation is described for the heteronuclear rare-gas dimers, the correlation parameter
The theoretical prediction by van de Waal of stacking faults in rare gas clusters has been verified experimentally. It was established that a defect fcc structure has been formed in clusters of mean sizes /V/> 1500 atoms/cluster. The stacking fault density is a linear function of N-1/3. The number o
Infrared dissociation spectra of the phenol-Ar and -Kr van der Waals cluster ions in supersonic free jets were observed in the absorption region of the OH stretching vibration. Both spectra showed the OH stretching vibration at 3535 IL 2 cm-', indicating that the perturbation of the rare gases is sm
