β¦ Synopsis
This invention relates to high-pressure, female couplings for sub-sea use in oil and gas exploration and production applications. An annular cavity in the wall of the probe seal is open to the outer surface of the (generally) ring-shaped probe seal. Hydraulic fluid, under pressure, enters the annular cavity through the opening and exerts a radial force on sealing elements. The annular cavity has an L-shaped or a T-shaped cross-section. This provides additional 'energisation' to the seal. Relatively stiff seal materials, such as PEEK, also may be used.
