A new low-band gap small molecule (Se-SM), which contains dithyenyl-benzoselenadiazole as central unit and terminal cyanovinylene 4-nitrophenyls, was synthesized. In addition, a new phenylenevinylene copolymer (P) containing dithyenyl-dinitrobenzothiadiazole moieties was synthesized by Heck coupling
