Fluorescence spectra of frans-l,Z~i_(l-naphthyl)cthylcnc and I .4di-(2-mphthyl)-benzene were found lo be a supcrposition of emissions from two or more fluorescing species. These species have been identified as conformers differing from one another by their nuclear configurations. The phcnomcnon is though1 to be inhcrcnt 10 complex organic molccules which admit the forma:ion of conformers due to the rotation of chromophoric fragments around single chemical bonds.
