✦ Synopsis

The axial conformation of an aromatic tertiaryamidegroupmaybe powerfully influenced byanadjacent stereogenic centre. Becausethe amide axis can atso control tbejorrmuion of new chiralcentres, theamidecanactas a "relaycentre"for the transmission of stereochemical information. Confirmational interlockingof adjacent anridegroups on an aromatic ring means that a pair of amide groups can be used in series to mediate asymmetric induction between remote stereogeniccentres, for examplethoselying para acrossan aromaticring.
