Synopsis
The characterislic ratio C, . = (r*)o/iW,e of the &u(l + 4'>liiiked polysaccharides xylan and niannan has been computed as a function of the angle z at the bridge oxygen Ittoni and t.he degree of polymerizat.ion 9. The calculated values of the characteristic ratio CAT are very high relat.ive to their free rotational dimensions. The characteristic ratio of these polysaccharides converges to the wymptot.ic value at low degree of polyinerieation a t higher z values. The low values of tshe calculated characteristic ratio of xylan compared t80 cellulose and mannan for the same T value indicate that the former is more flexible aiid assumes a compact eoiifigurat, ioll. A pronounced difierence in the values of the oharact, eristic ratio C*,. of cellulose and inaniian h w also been observed at lower 7 angles (<120"). On the other hand, nearly the same values of CAv have been obtained a t higher T aiigles (lZOo-lS50), which suggests t>hat cellulose and mannan may have similar configiiratons in certain solvents.
