โฆ Synopsis
The 71st Annual Meeting of the Geologische Vereinigung was held in Kopenhagen, 27 February-1 March, and together with the Geological Society of Denmark a well-attended symposium on 'Precambrian Problems' was organized. Some 345 earth scientists and students from 12 countries in Europe and five outside it gathered in the university building just outside Kopenhagen to review and discuss Archean and Proterozoic themes. West Germany (133 participants) and the Nordic countries (150 participants: Denmark 77, Sweden 33, Norway 30 and Finland 10) sent the largest contingents but many other countries, including the Soviet Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Egypt, were represented.
This was a working conference, gnmly devoted to its formidable task of reading and discussing 72 papen, in part during parallel sessions. This took three days of fine but cold weather, from 9 o'clock in the morning till past 6 o'clock in the evening. There were no social functions, no official banquets or receptions and, sadly, no visits to the breweries for which Kopenhagen is so justly famous (among geologists, that is).
